School Policies and Requirements

Attendance and Make-up Policy Students must maintain a minimum 80% attendance for all enrolled Classes. Overall Attendance and individual Class Attendance percentages are calculated as follows:

(# of attended Periods) ÷ (# of Periods held)

For example, a student enrolled for 5 weeks in 18 hours of class (8 class sessions/week) would be enrolled for (5w * 8cs = 40 total class sessions). If the student attends 37 sessions, their attendance percentage would be (37 ÷ 40 = 92.5% attendance).

Therefore, this student would be considered in good standing with the School.

Attendance will account for 20% of a Student’s Grade for each Class. Daily attendance shall be entered according to the following:

100% On-time, stay for full Period

75% Tardy (1-15 minutes late or leave 1-15 minutes early)

50% Tardy (>15 minutes late or leave >15 minutes early, but miss <50% of class)

0% Absent or missing >50% of class

Note: All Periods for which a Student has been registered in a given term are included in Overall Attendance percentage. Attendance record begins on the date a Student Enrolls in a Class.

Make-up assignments must be limited to the completion of classes comparable to those missed by the student. It should be noted that a make-up class does not replace an absence from class. Make-up classes are to help students acquire that which was missed because of an absence and not as a substitute for class.

Leave of Absence/Vacation Policy

A Vacation is defined as a Session during which a qualifying F-1 Student is not required to enroll in classes (excluding designated school holidays and weekends). Prior to beginning a Vacation, a qualifying Student must fulfill the following requirements:

Completed two (2) full, consecutive Semesters Maintained valid F-1 status, per School and USCIS policies Fulfill all outstanding financial obligations Notify ESL Administration of intent to take Vacation by filling out Vacation Request Form, including:

Intended begin and end dates for the Vacation (including next intended Enrollment date) General plans (i.e. travel domestically and/or internationally, etc.)

Per USCIS (United States Customs & Immigration Service), a leave of absence is limited to 60 calendar days in any 12-month period or one-half the published program length (1 year is the published program length), whichever is shorter. Multiple Vacation periods may be permitted upon ESL Administration approval if the total days of Vacation do not exceed these parameters. Failure to satisfy the requirements of this policy will result in Termination of the Student’s F-1 record.

Refund policy
To request a refund, a Student must submit to ESL Administration a signed Notification of Withdrawal. All refunds will be made within forty-five (45) calendar days of Refund Request Form submission, and are pro-rated in whole-week units. Refunds will be calculated as follows:

The first 4 weeks’ tuition is non-refundable. No refund is available after 50% of the present Session has elapsed. For students who withdraw at any point in the first four weeks, House of Tutors shall retain the charges applicable to the first four weeks. For students who withdraw after the midpoint of a Session, the institution may retain all of the charges for that term.

Exception: Program Cancellation - If House of Tutors cancels a Class or Program after a Student has enrolled and paid for that Class/Program, House of Tutors will refund 100% of the unused tuition paid for that Class/Program (pro-rated in whole-week units).

NOTE: No tuition shall be accepted prior to a Student's arrival at House of Tutors. Pre-payments prior to visa approval and arrival in the United States shall not be accepted under any circumstances. The only monies collected prior to a Student's reporting to House of Tutors include the Application Fee and any applicable courier/other fees, which are non-refundable (see Tuition & Fees Schedule).

No refund is available for Students who are terminated due to violation of House of Tutors' written policies and procedures or local, state or federal law.
