Planning Ahead
It is important for students to plan ahead for their arrival in Austin. Students should arrange their flight as soon as they know their program start date. House of Tutors recommends that students take care of travel details in advance, especially transportation from the airport and hotel reservations.
Money
Students should make sure to bring enough money to cover expenses for the first month, which will likely be the most expensive month of a student’s stay. First month expenses include housing, transportation, tuition, books, climate-appropriate clothing, and household items.
House of Tutors advises students against carrying large sums of cash. Instead, we recommend using traveler’s checks or credit/debit cards (before leaving, be sure to check policies regarding international transactions). Upon arrival, House of Tutors can assist students with opening a US bank account, which is a more convenient way to pay for daily expenses.
Airport Pick-up
Upon request, a House of Tutors employee will pick students up at the airport upon arrival in Austin. There is a $75 fee for airport pickup and arrangements must be made with the ESL Program Director at least two weeks in advance.
Below are some other options for transportation from the airport. A taxi/cab from the airport to the University of Texas area will cost approximately $30-$40. A shuttle will cost approximately $15-$20.
